Riches to Rags: The story of Ex Billionaire, Goddy Anabor who now drives a taxi.
Stories of Grass To Grace are common, so common that almost everybody has one to tell. Hence, it is always strange to hear stories of ‘grace to grass’ or in some cases ‘riches to rags’!
This is the case of Ex Billionaire, Chief Godwin ‘Goddy’ Anabor, a man whose sad downfall still rings a bell…
In his hey days, Goddy Anabor as he is fondly called was one of the most celebrated billionaires in Nigeria. Anabor, who was the publisher of the defunct Hearts Magazine lived in the same neighborhood with one of the richest Nigerians ever, Chief Moshood Kashimawo Abiola at the highbrow Abiola Crescent, off Toyin Street, Ikeja, Lagos.
He was so rich and influential that back in those days, Chief Anabor was known to host big parties in big hotels, spending hundreds of millions just to take care of his friends.
Sadly, this is not the case today as Anabor has gone from “I am Rich” to “I was Rich”. Anabor lost everything and he blames everyone and everything but himself.
While nobody can singularly explain the source of his wealth back then, it was widely believed that he was involved in the then thriving business of swindling people and drugs.
Chief Goddy had more than 50 cars like Bentley, Rolls Royce and others. He was known for only buying cars that were newly manufactured, all of which he sold at the peak of his crisis.
While the erstwhile billionaire blames ‘household’ enemies for his downfall, it is still a mystery how he went from being chauffeured in Bugattis to being a chauffeur on the streets of Lagos. He now engages in a Taxi business to keep body and soul together.
Operating incognito, Anabor uses a Toyota Camry (tiny light) for this and usually resumes his activities around 1am when fewer eyes will be on him. His take off point is the popular Allen Avenue in Ikeja, Lagos.
You will all agree that Rags to Riches stories are still the best, Anabor practically begs to survive today, Hence, for those who still brag that ‘wealth’ is untouchable, you now know…
